Sunshine Manor is a retro-inspired horror role-playing game with the aim set for a release this autumn. It does not take much to see a couple of the sources of inspiration in the trailer above. The game takes place in Aitken Manor where the main character Ada has been locked up during the annual mischief or candy round in the neighborhood. It is with her psychic powers that the player must overcome puzzles, find a way out and fight against both smaller enemies and bosses. The developers promise a rich story with an eerie atmosphere and a soundtrack signed in the 80’s made specifically for the game.
Sunshine Manor has sprung out Fossil Games, who also developed the appreciated Camp Sunshine which goes in the same genre. The project was funded through Kickstarter in a campaign which ended on November 6, 2020. The release is scheduled for October 28 this year, just in time for All Saints’ Day, and the platforms are PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch. It is not clear which Sony / Microsoft machines are involved.
With with games like The Last Door, Yume Nikki, Lone Survivor and Viviette pixel-based horror seems to be a prosperous subgenre. And why not? Personally, I never forget how Metroid Fusion made me put my breath in my throat, how disgusted I first became Splatterhouse 2 or how hair-raising Shadowgate could be. Pixels can be so scary anyway.
