Review: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla – SENSES

“It was cursing me at the time!”, Was my reaction when Ubisoft announced that Assassin’s Creed Valhalla would be released. Finally, an Assassin’s Creed comes in Viking vintage!

Personally, I have been involved since the very first Assassin’s Creedgame and counts me as a massive fan of the game series. However, I think the franchise has lost much of its status after the excellent Assassin’s Creed Unity. can Assassin’s Creed Valhalla regain its place on the throne among open world games?

I begin my journey by following the protagonist Eivor into the 8th century, Old Norse Norway. The absolute first thing I am struck by is how incredibly beautiful the scenery actually is, from the valleys to the mountains, the weather, the sky, the sea and everything in between is incredibly well done. Just the small details like that I leave tracks in the deep snow when I walk in it so that the water changes direction when a fish comes up to the surface makes a gigantic difference and fills me with a wonderful feeling. I spent 60 minutes just free-climbing up a waterfall, just because I thought it was so incredibly beautiful…

In terms of game mechanics, Ubisoft has really stepped up its game, everything is improved: the climb, the walk, the battles, the ride and so on flow much better than it has done before, which makes the experience even more realistic than before. And speaking of raising the level of the game, you have been given the opportunity to blend into the crowds where you are not normally welcome, but still be able to be there without being discovered. This kind of sneaking is something I really missed Origins and Oddysey.

If we are going to jump over to some flaws, I think the prologue in the game feels very long – almost a bit for long, because not much really happens before setting sail for England. Once in England, the next smolk comes in the mead cup – it is in itself only visual, but still: the Greek / Roman architecture in the cities makes itself a little too reminiscent so that I almost feel like I’m back in the predecessor AC: Odyssey. As mentioned this spring Xbox Series Xreview, you notice that here are some minor bugs, but nothing that really disturbs the gaming experience and something Ubisoft learns to patch right away.

Precis som i Odyssey so you have to choose between a male and a female Eivor – but, what is completely new for the game this year is that you can change the DNA strand from male to female whenever you want, and if you choose from the beginning that the game will choose for you, you will alternate as both in the course of history. It can be perceived as messy, but it’s a very fun idea in my opinion. Another thing that is new is that the skill tree is built in a completely different way than before, where you can choose between three different playing styles (Warrior, Stealth & Dexterity) or balance between them so that you become pretty good at everything but maybe not a champion. on something.

If I am now going to try to sum up all the impressions, I must first start by weighing the flaws against everything positive. And the positive far outweighs, in my opinion, to the extent that I was barely disturbed by the negative. The game mechanics are cruel, visually so Assassin’s Creed Valhalla a delight to the eye, whether you are in dirty England or in fantastically beautiful Norway and the story is really exciting (apart from some embarrassing dialogues in the animated sequences). So, have then Assassin’s Creed Valhalla regained the throne within the genre, which was the issue right from the start?

I must state that the answer is: YES, it has! Ubisoft has really taken on the consumer criticism, turned them into action and in this way also released a fantastically fun, challenging and captivating game. With all that said, I must also state, towards the end of the year, that this is clearly the best game I have played this year. And if that statement does not become a must have in the collection, then I do not know what it is.
