Review: The Gunk – SENSES

Our avatar Rani and her friend Becks has landed on a new, unexplored planet in search of energy for his ship and something valuable to sell. Soon they notice that the planet is slowly but surely being taken over by a mourner they call The Gunk. Rani is equipped with a robot arm that can suck up the mud and thus save the planet. When they then find a forgotten civilization, it turns out that everything is much bigger than they could ever believe.

The Gunk is developed and distributed by Swedish companies and it is so fun to see how awesome our domestic games are! I had not heard of The Gunk before I saw it in the review pile and when I saw the trailer I immediately became interested. There was something about the feeling in the game that was different.

The game mechanics themselves are pretty ordinary; you collect different elements to be able to upgrade your stuff and pretty quickly you get into how to handle your robot arm, which can do a lot of different things. It is important to use the environment around you in the best possible way to move forward. The world is colorful and brings to mind the planet Pandora (Avatar), but without feeling like a rip-off for that matter.

The mud that slowly eats up all life is called, as I said, The Gunk and at first it is quite harmless, but the further into the game you get, the more life-threatening it becomes. When you clear an area from the mud, the vegetation recovers and everything becomes as it was before – and it is just as satisfying every time.

After a while you find traces of a civilization that has met a terrible fate and from that I was quite happy to scan things and clear away the mourning, it turns out that now the real game starts. Which makes it very difficult to shut down. I just want to add another section and then another…! The controls are tight and fun and checkpoints are laid out at good intervals, so there will be no irritation when you die. The Gunk is very easy at first but quickly becomes more difficult and there are a lot of ingenious ways to solve the tasks and move on.

The only negative that I could address with the game is that sometimes the animations feel a bit outdated to the brand new game. But it’s just fluff really, too The Gunk is fun, has a good story, houses interesting characters and is very affordable (and now included in Game Pass) so it will be a given must.
