PS5 Japan Resellers

As you probably already know, the PlayStation 5 is not an easy console to find, and this is just as true in Japan as it is here in the West. Naturally, Sony is doing its best to sell as many current-gen consoles as possible, but due to ongoing chip shortages and other lingering manufacturing issues (caused in large part by the pandemic), it’s still going to be a while. before Sony can match consumer demand.

However, a new incentive could help alleviate the situation. As reported by yahoo! Japan A few weeks ago (sorry we missed it!), Sony is currently working with retailers to address PS5 scalping in Japan. A quick explanation for good measure: a ‘reseller’ is someone who buys limited stock to resell at a higher price, and the PS5 has been a key target for scalpers since its launch in 2020.

Regardless, Sony is providing retailers with official seals, which apply to PS5 packaging. The idea is that when a PS5 is sold, the retailer will break the seal so that the PS5 can be identified as sold and ‘open’. Apparently the seal itself is difficult to remove, which is why a boxed PS5 that was sold is a reseller. they should be easy to spot due to the seal or damaged packaging left by a removed seal.

It’s not clear how far the reach of this incentive is within Japan, but it seems like a pretty decent plan. I wish I had Some degree of impact on the resale market, and more PS5s are making their way to regular customers.
